The 4 is the one people recognise by its cage, the panel that wraps the lacing and carries the eyelet wings, and by a heel and midsole shape that make it look engineered rather than drawn. Black Canvas swaps the usual upper material for a woven one, which flattens the shoe's shine and makes the cage read as pure structure. It is the most utilitarian way to own a 4: no colour blocking to date it, no gloss, just the geometry that made the model a design landmark.
Two ways to run it. First, black cargo trousers and a washed black tee, a full tonal utility fit where the cage geometry is the only detail doing work. Second, olive or khaki wide trousers with a black hooded top, the canvas keeping the shoe from looking too formal for a heavy trouser. The 4 needs room: a slim tapered leg makes it look bottom heavy, so give it a straight or wide hem that clears the midsole. Canvas breathes well in humid weather, which is a real advantage here. It is also one of the three models Travis Scott has worked on with the brand under Cactus Jack, alongside the 1 and the 6, which is why the 4 carries so much weight in current sneaker conversation. Canvas changes how the 4 behaves. It is lighter and more breathable than a coated upper, it creases in soft folds rather than sharp lines, and it takes on the shape of your foot faster. Black canvas also absorbs light, so the eyelet wings and the cage stand out by shadow rather than contrast. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the II and the 4 sits on a moulded midsole rather than a flat cupsole, which is why it feels more supportive than a 1 underfoot.
