Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 12 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Cacao Wow/Geode Teal/Ale Brown/Twine/Sail/Luminous Green. The Air Jordan 4 belongs to Tinker Hatfield's run, the stretch from the third model onward when the line stopped being a signature shoe and became a design series with its own vocabulary. Where the Jordan 1 was a leather basketball shoe, the 4 is an exercise in visible structure and hardware. Cacao wow puts that shape into a warm brown, a tone with no connection to the Chicago red, black and white the brand treats as house colours, and reads closer to a boot than to a court shoe. In grade school sizing, it is one of the easiest entry points into the model: the shape everyone recognises, in a colour that behaves like outerwear rather than sportswear.
Brown wants warm neighbours. Recipe one: cream or ecru wide leg trousers, a chocolate or oatmeal knit, brown socks so the leg line runs unbroken into the shoe. Recipe two: raw indigo denim with a cuff, an olive chore jacket, a white tee, letting the brown ground everything. Avoid pure black clothing with cacao unless you want the shoe to look dusty. The 4 is a bulky silhouette, so it needs a trouser with some volume; skinny hems make it look oversized. Suede style panels hate water, so protect before wear, brush in one direction with a soft brush, and keep them out of heavy rain.
The 4 is a collaboration magnet: Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work with Jordan Brand covered the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, which put this specific silhouette at the centre of the modern hype cycle. That sits on top of the brand's wider collaboration programme with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, plus music partners including Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. The result is that a 4 in any colourway is read against a decade of high profile versions. Earth tones are the quiet answer to that, keeping the shape that carries the cultural charge while stepping out of the auction entirely.
The 4 is built around exposed support elements and a heavily worked upper rather than the clean leather panels of the first model, so the silhouette carries more visual information from every angle. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model and remains the underfoot idea here. Cacao brown flattens the panel divisions, which makes the shape read heavier and more sculptural than the same shoe in white. Grade school sizing scales the build rather than simplifying it. Jordan Brand does not publish a full material sheet for each colourway, so confirm the exact mix of leather, suede and mesh style panels in hand before making assumptions from product images.
