Thunder is the 4 in black with yellow, a pairing that behaves like hazard signage: the darkest possible upper broken by a colour that exists to be seen. The 4 belongs to the Tinker Hatfield stretch that began at the Air Jordan 3, the moment the line stopped being one signature shoe and became a series with recurring hardware and its own visual grammar. Where the 3 introduced elephant print and put the Jumpman on the tongue, the 4 pushed the structure outward, adding visible plastic and mesh to a basketball shoe. Thunder is the colourway that makes that structure easiest to read, because the yellow picks out edges the black would otherwise swallow.
Black and yellow wants restraint above the ankle. Wear it with black cargo trousers and a plain black hooded top so the yellow is the only signal, or with washed grey denim and a charcoal overshirt for something less severe. Do not add yellow clothing; the shoe already carries it. The 4 has real volume, so straight or slightly wide legs sit better than skinny cuts, and a stacked hem hides the hardware you paid for. Jordan Brand's wider collaboration programme includes Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, which is the company a black and yellow 4 keeps on a shelf.
The 4's identity is in its hardware. Mesh netting panels sit in the side walls for airflow, plastic lace wings flank the throat so laces can be locked at different tensions, and a moulded heel counter holds the rear foot. Nike Air cushioning, present in the line from the Air Jordan 2 onward, sits underfoot, which is why the 4 is one of the more wearable retros for long days. On a black upper the yellow accents mark the eyelets and midsole, so the shoe still shows its shape at night. Black nubuck style uppers hold dust in the nap; brush dry rather than wetting them, since water marks darker panels unevenly.
