    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 April 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a mesh upper. Reverse Skunk flips the colour order of a Dunk High Pro SB that skate collectors named, not Nike's marketing department. That naming habit is the real story of the SB line. Nike arrived in skating as an outsider with enormous resources: a company founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, importing Onitsuka Tiger from a car boot at track meets, that had taken about half the US athletic shoe market by 1980. The SB Dunk was how it tried to belong somewhere it had not grown up, and the audience responded by taking ownership of the language, giving colourways their own names and deciding which ones counted.
Two ways. First, skate normal: baggy black denim stacked over the collar, a graphic tee and a work jacket, with the laces run loose and the tongue sitting thick. Second, cleaner: dark straight trousers, a cream crew knit and a black bomber, so the reversed colour blocking becomes the only pattern in the outfit. SB padding makes the high fit tighter than a standard Dunk High, so most people stay true and skip thick socks. Lace fully if you want ankle support. Clean panels separately with mild soap, never soak a padded tongue because it holds water, and stuff with paper to hold shape while drying.
SB's early years included a real misstep: the 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005, settled out of court. Read alongside the Beatles episode, where Nike used Revolution in 1987 after paying Capitol Records without Apple Records' approval and pulled the ads in March 1988, a pattern emerges of a company that repeatedly took from music culture faster than it asked. What survived is a collecting scene that names its own shoes, and a high top like this one carries that scene's vocabulary rather than Nike's.
Pro SB rebuilds the Dunk for landings. The court upper stays panelled, but padding goes in where the foot takes repeated impact, particularly across a thicker tongue and a reinforced collar, and the high cut wraps the ankle rather than sitting under it. The colour reversal in this execution is a panel level change: the same blocking, with the base and overlay tones swapped, which is why it reads as a mirror of a shoe you have seen rather than as a new one. Nike's traction thinking descends from Bowerman's waffle iron, the search for grip that cost nothing in weight, and a skate outsole still runs on that trade. Style code CW9971 500 confirms the pair.
