Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 October 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a nubuck upper in Wheat/Wheat/Gum Yellow/Black. Wheat is a workwear colour, not a sports colour. It belongs to boots and to the trades, and Nike has used it for years as the reliable way to take a court silhouette out of the gym without changing its shape. On a Dunk Low SE, wheat swaps the usual two tone team blocking for a single earth tone that runs across the whole upper, which quietly changes what the shoe is for. It stops reading as a basketball reference and starts reading as something you would wear with heavy trousers in cold weather. This is Nike doing what it has done since it began putting its own shoes out under the Swoosh in the early 1970s: keeping the last, changing the language.
Two outfits. Brown duck canvas work trousers, a cream waffle knit and a dark green overshirt, letting the wheat sit in the middle of a full earth palette. Or black straight jeans and a black bomber, using the shoe as the only warm note in a cold outfit. This is a cool weather colour and a cool weather shoe, better in a Delhi December than an August afternoon. Size true; Dunks run a touch long rather than wide. For care, protect it before first wear with a spray suited to the upper material, blot rain rather than rubbing it, and clean with a barely damp cloth so you do not create a tide line across a single tone upper.
Nike became a fashion object because other people decided it was one. Through the 1980s, driven by the Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns, the company's shoes moved into urban and hip hop dress and then into general youth wardrobes, and by the 1990s and 2000s they were fixed into casual and athleisure dressing. That transfer is what makes an earth tone Dunk possible at all: once a shoe is a wardrobe item rather than equipment, it can be recoloured for a season instead of for a sport. Wheat is the version aimed squarely at the people who wear Nike with workwear rather than with tracksuits.
A tonal wheat upper means there is no colour contrast to hide behind, so the panel structure of the Dunk becomes the whole design: the toe, the quarter, the eyestay and the Swoosh separated only by stitching and by how each panel takes light. SE releases exist to change the material or the finish rather than the pattern, so expect the surface treatment to be the point of this pair. Practically, wheat is a mid tone, which means it hides dust better than white and shows water marks worse than black. Rain will stain it in patches before it stains it evenly. The low collar and flat sole keep the shoe close to the ground, so it walks firm rather than cushioned.
