Released on 10 November 2021 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a leather upper. Project Unicorn takes the Dunk High SB and dresses it as the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, which means white armour panels, gold detailing and the sharp red and blue accents the mobile suit is known for. Nike SB has always been the division most willing to put a story on a shoe, and it has occasionally learned that lesson the hard way, as when it used Minor Threat album art in 2005 and issued a public apology. A licensed anime build is that instinct pointed at a property with its own devoted audience, using a skate silhouette that was already a canvas. The Dunk High gives it the surface area the theme needs.
Two ways to run it. Baggy dark denim with a plain white tee and a windbreaker, keeping everything else quiet so the shoe reads as the single graphic element. Or lean technical: black cargos, a grey zip top and a cap, letting the gold and red accents pop against neutral layers. High tops sit best with a cuff or a slight break in the trouser, not with a full stack of fabric on top. Size true to your usual Dunk. Detailed panels want a soft brush and mild cleaner rather than any solvent, and metallic trim scuffs permanently, so keep them off rough concrete if you are wearing rather than skating them.
Nike moved into digital and licensed territory well beyond footwear, acquiring the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT and working with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product, so an anime licence sits comfortably inside its recent behaviour rather than outside it. On the street side, Nike shoes have been status objects in urban and hip hop fashion since the 1980s and staples of mainstream youth dress since, which is what lets a character shoe read as fashion instead of merchandise. The Dunk High SB carries character work better than most silhouettes because skateboarding always treated its shoes as flags.
A skate build first: leather and synthetic panels across the high Dunk upper, a heavily padded tongue and collar for impact protection, reinforced stitching at the wear points and a rubber cupsole with a pivot pattern for board feel. Nike SB versions of the Dunk are built with more cushioning underfoot than the standard model precisely because they were designed to be skated. The Gundam theme lives in the panel colouring, the metallic trim and the detailing at tongue, heel and insole rather than in any structural change. That is the practical upside: it fits and skates like a Dunk High and the graphics do not compromise the shoe. Expect a stiff collar for the first week.
