Origin
Released on 1 March 2025 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Halo Blue/Cloud White/Focus Blue. The Handball Spezial comes from the part of adidas that built shoes for European indoor sport, a category most brands ignored and adidas treated as seriously as football. It is a wide, flat, suede court shoe with a thick gum outsole, designed to grip a wooden floor and let a player pivot without rolling. Halo Blue Gum puts it in a pale washed out blue against the warm amber of the gum sole, a pairing that has made the Spezial one of the most collected shapes in the Originals line. The shoe never had to be redesigned for the street: it just walked off the court and stayed.
Utility
Halo Blue and gum is a soft palette that sits well with heavier clothing. Recipe one: dark raw denim with a cream fisherman knit, where the gum sole ties to the cream and the pale blue keeps the whole thing from going flat. Recipe two: olive or brown cargo trousers with a navy overshirt, using the blue as the coolest note in an otherwise earthy outfit. Best for autumn and winter dressing, long walking days and travel. The Spezial runs wide and roomy, so if you have a narrow foot go down half a size. Brush the suede in one direction only, keep it away from monsoon water, and use a gum eraser on the sole rather than soap.
Influence
Terrace culture in Britain and Europe made the Spezial a badge, picking through adidas's indoor sport archive for shapes that signalled knowledge rather than money. That is the same mechanism that gave adidas its biggest cultural moment: Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986, then signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company after holding their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden. Both cases are the brand being chosen rather than doing the choosing. The Trefoil, designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, is now the mark that officially covers everything the terraces got to first.
Construction
Suede upper with a broad, roomy toe box, suede Three Stripes stitched the full length of the flank, and a thick gum rubber outsole with a court pattern underneath. That gum sole is the Spezial's signature and its practical advantage: it is grippier on smooth floors than a standard rubber compound and it warms the whole colourway. Halo Blue is a soft, low saturation tone, so it shows dust rather than dirt and can be brought back with a brush. The Spezial sits wider and flatter than a Gazelle or a Samba, which is why people with broader feet gravitate to it, and why it is the more comfortable of the three over a full day.
