Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 October 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the White/Court Purple/Black colourway. Court Purple on white is one of the cleanest colour splits this silhouette takes, and it works because the Air Jordan 1 was designed to be read from a distance. Peter Moore drew it with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 to a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal with a royalty attached, roughly three times any other contract in the league. Nike expected three million dollars of sales over three years. The first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million dollars. Purple never belonged to the Bulls, which is why this pairing reads as a design decision rather than a tribute.
Utility
High contrast means keeping the rest simple. White tee, mid wash straight jeans, and purple as the only colour in the frame is the version that always works. The second recipe inverts the weight: all black clothing with the white and purple shoe as the single bright element, which suits evening better than daylight. Avoid other purples, which rarely match. Low cut is for walking, travel and standing days rather than sport. All the mythology still attaches: the Banned advertising built on a league rule requiring court shoes to be at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine, Spike Lee directing and starring as Mars Blackmon, and a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. But the Low is bought to be worn. It is the shoe that turned a collector's object back into daily footwear without losing any of the reference.
Construction
A two colour Low is the most legible build in this catalogue: white carries the base, purple carries the overlays, and the panel geometry does everything else. The Low cut sits below the ankle, so there is no support from the collar and the shoe reads long and flat on foot, which suits a high contrast split. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the Air Jordan II. White is the maintenance burden and saturated purple against it is the risk, since dye transfer onto white is far harder to lift once it has set.
