Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 January 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper. A Lunar New Year release on the OG tooling of the model that built the brand. The Air Jordan 1 was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984, and it reached the public on 1 April 1985. OG means the original pattern rather than the modernised versions, cut to the low collar. Jordan Brand has used the calendar as a design brief since it became a standalone Nike division in 1997, and the Lunar New Year slot is where the brand allows itself detail work it would never put on a general release: layered materials, hidden graphics, changed lace hardware. Style code DD2233 001.
Dark base, detail rich upper, so let people find the details rather than announcing them. First: black tapered trousers with a clean break just at the collar, a grey knit, minimal jewellery, so the special materials read only up close. Second: dark indigo denim cuffed once with a black bomber and white socks, which lifts the low cut and shows the full panel work. Occasion is evening and social, dry weather. Fit is true to length with a narrow midfoot on the original last. Care: soft brush only on any textured panels, damp cloth on smooth leather, no wet cleaning of layered materials, and store them boxed so the special hardware does not tarnish.
The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity: its first 50,000 pairs sold out, the model passed 150 million dollars in sales, original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market it anchors is valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Calendar releases are how the brand keeps that market fed without touching the core colourways. The shoe's cultural weight came from the collision of basketball and hip hop, from Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and from rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z writing it into records.
The OG 1 panel map is the whole point here, because a celebration make up needs seams to work with: wing tip toe with perforations, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh panel, low unpadded collar and a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle. On a Lunar New Year pair the interest sits in the materials layered onto those panels and in the small hardware and lace changes rather than in any change to the shoe's shape or tooling. Because the base is black, scuffing shows less than on a white pair, but any contrast detailing is where wear will read first. Keep the original laces; they are part of what this pair is.
