Jordan 1 Low Reverse Black Toe (Women's)

    Culture Note™️

    Origin

    chevron
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Gym Red. Black Toe is one of the oldest colour ideas in the line, a blocking pattern where black takes the toe box and heel against red and white. Reverse Black Toe flips which panels carry which colour, and it is a move that only works because the Air Jordan 1's panel structure is so familiar that people notice when it is inverted. This is the women's Low, the cut that removed the collar and let the blocking become the entire point. The pattern is Peter Moore's, drawn with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 and released to the public on 1 April 1985. Reversing it is a fluent joke, not a redesign.

    Utility

    chevron
Two fits. Clean and classic: straight leg blue jeans, a white tee and a black jacket, with no visible sock so the low collar reads. Or sharper: black tailored trousers cropped at the ankle, a red or white knit, and a black bag, which repeats the shoe's palette without copying it. The Low is the most versatile AJ1 cut, fine in an office that allows sneakers and fine on a weekend. Women's sizing runs narrow, so size up half for a wide foot. Clean the light panels early with a soft brush and mild soap, wipe the black with a damp cloth, and keep the midsole bright.

    Influence

    chevron
The red, black and white palette works as a Jordan Brand colour in its own right, alongside the number 23, and it is the palette hip hop reached for when 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in music. It is also the palette of the Banned advertising, which was built on the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white, a rule that cited the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, with Nike paying the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesigning. A reversed version speaks to people who know the original well enough to spot the switch.

    Construction

    chevron
A leather upper cut below the ankle bone, with the standard perforated toe box, mudguard, eyestay and heel counter over a rubber cupsole carrying the forefoot pivot circle. The women's Low is built on a narrower last than the men's, so it holds closer through the midfoot and sits lower on the ankle. Reversed blocking means the panels that usually hide wear are now the panels that show it, so pay attention to whichever section is light: on a Low, the mudguard sits close to the ground and picks up scuffing first. Keep the midsole clean, because on a low cut shoe it is a large part of the visible surface.
