    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Off Noir/Black/White/Black. Elephant print does not belong to the Air Jordan 1. It arrived on the Air Jordan III, the first model Tinker Hatfield designed after Nike handed him the line, and it is the most recognisable material code the brand owns, a grey cracked pattern that now signals Jordan on its own without a Jumpman anywhere near it. Borrowing it back onto a blacked out 1 Low is the brand quoting itself, which is a move only a house with a real archive can make. The 1 underneath is Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, built for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, and the SE tag is what licenses the material swap.
Black with a grey pattern is a quiet shoe with a detail, so dress accordingly. Recipe one: black straight jeans, a charcoal knit and a black overshirt, where the print is the only texture in a flat outfit and reads clearly up close. Recipe two: grey wool trousers, a white tee and a black bomber, a fit where the elephant panels pick up the trousers and tie the look together. Black or grey socks. Low cut, hem cropped or cuffed. These wear well daily because the black hides city grime, but keep the printed panels away from rain and abrasion, since that is the one part of this shoe that cannot be restored once it wears through.
The III is the model that proved Air Jordan could be a design series rather than a single endorsement, and that proof led directly to Jordan Brand being spun out as a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own roster, apparel and collaborators. Elephant print is the visual shorthand for that turning point. It has since been used by the brand's collaboration partners, a list running through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, which is how a 1980s basketball texture ended up as a luxury reference. On a black 1 Low it is the most understated way to wear that history.
A black leather upper with elephant print panels placed where the eye lands, typically the toe cap, the heel wrap or the Swoosh, so the pattern reads as texture against a flat dark ground. That contrast is the whole design: black gives the print somewhere to sit, and the print gives the black something to do. Low collar, free ankle, flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle underneath. The print is a printed material rather than a dyed leather, so clean it with a soft dry brush and avoid saturating it, since heavy wet cleaning flattens the cracked pattern's contrast permanently. Condition the black leather separately when it starts looking grey.
