Game Royal is one of the colours that has followed the Air Jordan 1 since its first years, and on a Retro Low OG it comes with the original geometry rather than an approximation of it. OG here means the panel pattern and proportions of the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, the one Nike created for a rookie it had signed on 26 October 1984 to a six year, 2.5 million dollar contract with a royalty attached. Nike expected modest returns and got a sell out of its first 50,000 pairs instead. Royal blue survived that first era into the permanent palette alongside the Chicago red, black and white, which is why this reads as archive rather than as a seasonal colour.
Royal wants a plain field around it. First: white or ecru trousers, a white tee, a light blue overshirt, everything pale so the blue panels do the talking at the floor. Second: mid wash denim, a grey crewneck and a navy cap, which layers three blues at different depths and works because the shoe is the most saturated of them. Avoid black outerwear, which drags the royal toward navy. A good warm weather and daytime shoe, less suited to rain because pale base panels stain from splash. Clean bright and pale sections separately with foam, brush dry dust first, skip solvents, and keep them out of direct sun so the blue holds.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and archival colours are the currency of that market: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX inside a resale economy valued near 2 billion dollars. Royal is one of the tones that carries that first era memory without needing an explanation. The cultural push around it came from Spike Lee, who directed Nike's earliest advertising while playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and from hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers. An OG low in royal is heritage worn casually rather than heritage displayed.
The Retro Low OG format matters on a bright colour, because the original pattern gives the Swoosh and the quarter panel more surface than a modern low top does, and royal blue across that surface is what you actually see from ten metres away. Set against a pale base, the seam lines become drawn edges and any lacing sloppiness is visible. Nike Air did not reach the signature line until the Air Jordan 2, so the ride is flat, firm and stable rather than cushioned. Saturated blue dyes are the ones most likely to lift under solvent, and a pale base panel next to them will show any transfer immediately, so clean the two tones separately and never with the same cloth.
