Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 December 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Phantom/University Red. Travis Scott is one of Jordan Brand's most consequential collaborators, working under the Cactus Jack name across the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6. Black Phantom is the low cut chapter of that first model, and this is the toddler size run, which is its own statement: the brand producing a serious collaborator's shoe in a size that will be outgrown within a year. The base is the Retro Low OG, the faithful build of the silhouette Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, produced for Michael Jordan in November 1984 and released publicly the following April. SP marks it as a special project, the designation the brand uses for its collaborative runs rather than its seasonal ones.
Keep it simple, because the shoe is the whole outfit. Black joggers with a plain white tee lets the collaboration read without any competition, and denim dungarees over a striped long sleeve works for the version where the shoe is just good footwear. Nothing printed on top. Check toddler sizing with a thumb width of space at the toe, and re check every few months, since feet at this age change faster than the shoe wears out. Wipe black leather with a damp cloth after playground use, dry away from heat, and accept that a worn pair is the point: this is a shoe to be used, not stored.
The Cactus Jack line is one of the clearest examples of Jordan Brand's collaboration programme, which also runs through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side and Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side. That programme sits on top of a resale economy this silhouette created: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the wider market has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. A toddler pair from a collaborator's line is where that economy meets a first pair of shoes, which is a strange and very modern thing.
The Retro Low OG build means the original panel map with the collar cut below the ankle bone, and toddler sizing means a shortened, wider last than the adult version, which is why these fit and feel different rather than just smaller. Black across the upper keeps the panel work quiet and lets the shoe's proportions carry it. There is no break in period on a Low, which matters for a size worn by someone who cannot tell you the shoe is uncomfortable. Lace it fully and check the heel hold before every wear. On a small size, the toe crease appears fast because a child's gait flexes the shoe harder than an adult's does.
