Designed by Eric Avar and released on 29 February 2024 as part of Nike's Air Foamposite line. This release has a foamposite upper in Black/Varsity Purple/Black. Nike spent the late 1980s learning that cushioning could be the visible argument for a shoe, starting with the 1987 Air Max, which cut a window into the midsole and turned a sealed pressurised gas unit into a design feature. The Air Foamposite One pushed the same logic upward into the upper, replacing panels and stitching with a single moulded shell. There is no cut-and-sew here to speak of, which is why the silhouette still looks like nothing else on a shelf. Eggplant is the deep aubergine colourway that made the shell famous, a purple so dark it only resolves into colour when light hits the curve directly.
A moulded purple shell needs a simple frame. Recipe one: black relaxed-fit trousers with a slight stack, a black hoodie and a purple-free jacket, so the only colour in the outfit is the one that appears when light hits the shell. Recipe two: dark indigo baggy denim, a grey sweatshirt and a black bomber, which lets the gloss read against matte fabric. Foamposites run large and are stiff at first, so size down half and expect a genuine break-in period across the instep. Wipe the shell with a soft microfibre cloth and mild cleaner, never abrasive, store away from heat and sunlight, and keep them upright, since the shell will not recover from being crushed.
Nike's court and Air models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward and then reappeared through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, but the Foamposite occupies a stranger corner of that story. It is the shoe that made basketball footwear look like industrial design, arriving in a period when Nike was signing signature athletes like Michael Jordan and building a business on their names. Eggplant is the colourway that people who follow this silhouette use as shorthand for the whole line. It is the reference point, the one every subsequent shell finish is compared against, and it earned that by being genuinely strange.
The defining feature is the moulded synthetic shell that forms the entire outer upper in one continuous piece, with the branding and the panel lines pressed into the material rather than sewn onto it. That construction means the shoe holds its shape permanently, does not crease the way leather does, and is far stiffer out of the box than any panelled build in this range. Nike Air provides the cushioning underneath as a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, which is what makes a rigid upper wearable at all. Eggplant reads near-black in shade and unmistakably purple in sun, and the shell's high gloss shows fingerprints and dust more readily than any leather Nike makes.
