Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and turned an endorsement into a business of its own, and the Air Jordan line that followed is the reason a shoe company can be spoken about in the same terms as a record label. The Air Jordan 1 is where that started, and the Low is the version that removed the ankle collar and let the shape become everyday wear rather than court equipment. Black with sail and gym red is the palette that made the line famous, applied to the least ceremonial silhouette in it. Sail rather than white matters here: it is a warmer, softer off white that reads as aged rather than new, which flatters both the black and the red.
Wear one: dark straight denim with a black tee and a red detail at the cap or the socks, so the gym red repeats and the outfit looks composed. Wear two: cream or sand trousers with a black knit, using the sail panels to link the shoe to the trousers and the black to link it to the top. Air Jordan 1 lasts run slightly narrow, so wide feet should go half up. Sail yellows with sunlight and dirt, so protect it before first wear, brush the seams with a mild solution and store the pair in the dark rather than on an open shelf.
Get the famous story right, because most people repeat the wrong version. The shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines and built its Banned campaign around the episode. What is undisputed is the effect: the Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop, after which Air Jordans became staples of mainstream American youth dress and then of the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. The Low is how that whole history gets worn on an ordinary Tuesday.
The Low is a leather panelled court build with a cupsole, a flat outsole and a collar that sits below the ankle bone, so it wears like a sneaker rather than like a basketball shoe. The three tone blocking is the design, with black on the overlays, sail across the base panels and gym red placed on the Swoosh, the collar or the outsole depending on the execution. Nike Air, the pressurised unit sealed into the midsole, sits underneath, which is why a shoe built out of stiff panels is comfortable for a full day. Leather over sail creases early and visibly, and the panel edges are where quality shows.
