Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 September 2024 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Black/White/Metallic Silver. The Air Jordan 1 came out of the deal Nike signed with Michael Jordan in 1984, a signing that turned into a line, then into a business of its own inside the company. The low cut version strips the ankle collar off that silhouette and leaves the panelling, which makes it the version that gets treated as a canvas for materials. This SE pair goes black on black with a croc textured finish, so the shape reads first and the surface reveals itself only at close range. It is the Jordan 1 dressed for evenings rather than for the court it was designed for.
Two builds. Night out: black straight leg trousers or dark selvedge denim with a black overshirt, so the croc texture is the only variation in an all black outfit. Daytime: grey sweats and a cream hoodie, letting the shoe anchor a soft palette. Jordan 1s run true to slightly long, and the low cut is more forgiving across the instep than the high. Keep it away from rain, since embossed leather absorbs water marks in the grain, and rotate rather than wearing it daily, because black on black looks flawless until the first crease line catches the light.
The Jordan 1's mythology needs one correction: the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines and built a campaign around the story. What is not in dispute is the marketing: Spike Lee directed the Air Jordan advertising and appeared in it as Mars Blackmon, which pushed the shoe from basketball into hip hop and from hip hop into mainstream American youth dress. Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became the status wear of that culture from the 1980s onward, and a blacked out Jordan 1 Low is the quietest way to wear that history.
A Jordan 1 Low keeps the essentials: leather panels stitched into a wing, toe and heel arrangement, a Swoosh running the length of the midfoot, a flat court outsole and a cut that sits below the ankle bone. What changes here is finish. A croc textured panel is embossed rather than smooth, which hides light scuffing better than plain leather but traps dust in the grain, so brush it with a soft dry brush along the pattern rather than wiping across it. Avoid conditioners that pool in the texture. Triple black means the midsole is the only part that will visibly age, so keep it clean and store the pair with trees inside.
