Designed by Peter Moore and released on 19 November 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Armory Navy/Mineral Slate. Armory Navy is a college colour, and the Dunk High is a college shoe. The silhouette exists because Nike wanted a basketball shoe that could be issued in team colours, so its panelled construction was designed from the start to hold two tones cleanly, and the shoe's whole grammar comes from that requirement. Style code DQ7679 400 puts this pair in a deep, slightly muted navy that sits closer to a naval uniform than to a bright royal blue. Nike had been in business since 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, importing Japanese running shoes, and by the time the Dunk arrived it held roughly half the American athletic shoe market and had the Swoosh working as shorthand for the whole company.
Navy is the easiest strong colour to place. First recipe: mid grey trousers or grey sweats with a white tee, where navy reads as the sharpest element without being loud. Second: full denim, indigo jeans and a denim shirt, letting the shoe sit in the same tonal family and pull the outfit together. High tops look best with a hem that either stops above the collar or stacks over it deliberately, never halfway. Dunks run close to true to size with a slim toe box. Loosen the top eyelets if the collar digs in. Brush dirt off before it sets, clean the midsole separately, and condition the panels occasionally to stop cracking at flex points.
Nike became the shoe of basketball through the Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising, and through basketball it became the shoe of hip hop, with its models settling in as staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward. The Dunk's route was slightly different: born as a team coloured court shoe, it was adopted first by skaters and later by everyone, and the collegiate colour language it was designed around survived every one of those transitions. Armory Navy is that language still working, a shoe whose colour name reads like a team allocation rather than a seasonal palette.
The high cut is the reason to choose this over the low. A Dunk High wraps the ankle with a padded collar, adds a longer lace run and gives the shoe visible height above the trouser hem, which changes how it sits in an outfit as much as how it feels on the foot. The upper is built from separate leather style overlay panels, so Armory Navy appears as distinct blocks against the base rather than as a single wash, and the panel edges are where the shoe shows its age. Deep navy hides scuffing well, which is one of the practical arguments for it. Expect a week of break in at the collar before it softens and folds naturally.
