Origin
Part of the Air Jordan 1 Brooklyn line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Global Purple/Black. Brooklyn is the 1 rebuilt as a boot, and No Gravity is the version of that idea that leans hardest into the brand's own mythology, since the whole visual identity is a man suspended in the air. The Jumpman came from Peter Moore, who had Jordan recreate a mid leap pose in Bulls gear after seeing a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics. Rentmeester sued Nike in 2015 over the logo and the Ninth Circuit affirmed dismissal in February 2018, holding the images not substantially similar. A boot named No Gravity is that founding image made literal, on a silhouette built for weather rather than hardwood.
Utility
Recipe one: winter, black straight leg jeans tucked slightly or resting on the collar, a heavy cream knit, and a wool overcoat, so the boot reads as footwear rather than a sneaker in disguise. Recipe two: wide leg cargo trousers with a wool socked ankle showing at the top, an oversized bomber, and a beanie, which suits the extra height. Wear it with a proper thick sock. Do not treat it as waterproof unless the materials say so, but do treat it before winter with a suitable protector. Dry it slowly at room temperature after wet days and never on a radiator, which hardens and cracks uppers.
Influence
The 1's high top outline is the most recognisable shape in sneakers, and taking it into boot territory is the brand exercising the licence it earned by becoming a design series rather than a shoe. Tinker Hatfield began that from the third model, adding a design language the line could keep extending: elephant print, patent leather on the eleventh, carbon fibre plates and later Flyknit. The women's programme is where that language now gets pushed furthest, because it is not tied to reissuing an archive spec. This is the brand treating its own silhouette as a font rather than as a relic.
Construction
A boot version of a high top changes the brief. You are getting more collar height and more coverage than a standard 1 High, which means real ankle hold and a shoe that stays on in bad conditions rather than one that simply looks tall. Expect a heavier build than the court model, and expect it to break in slowly around the collar rather than immediately. The women's last runs narrower, so account for thick socks when you size, since a winter boot worn with summer socks is the wrong shoe. Lace through every eyelet, because the height only does its job if the upper is closed against the ankle.
