Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 June 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Gym Red/College Grey/Sail. Black and college grey is the Air Jordan 1 at its most matter of fact. The shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore in 1984 was built as a colour blocking exercise, separate leather panels in hard edged contrast, and this women's Mid takes that logic and drains the saturation out of it. What remains is the shape: the wide Swoosh, the stepped overlays, the collar height that sits between the original high and the low. The women's line matters here because the brand's roster has never been men only, and grey on black is the version of the shoe that carries none of the founding palette's baggage. You get four decades of design without being asked to reference a specific season.
Recipe one: black leggings or slim jeans, an oversized grey hoodie and a black puffer, a fit that lets the shoe carry the only texture. Recipe two: a charcoal midi skirt with a black knit and a grey wool coat, where the Mid's collar height keeps the proportions from looking bare at the ankle. This is a walking and commuting shoe, comfortable across a full day, and it will not fight anything already in your wardrobe. Sizing generally runs true, with a half up if you have a wide forefoot. Clean the grey overlays with a dry brush before any water touches them, dry naturally away from heat, and store cool, since ageing midsole materials break down whether or not the shoe is worn.
Jordan Brand's athlete list includes WNBA players Maya Moore and Jordin Canada alongside its NBA signings, and its college basketball programmes include North Carolina, Jordan's own university, plus Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. That breadth is why a greyscale women's Mid is a normal part of the catalogue rather than a side project. The wider cultural machinery is the same one that carried the line since the beginning, hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising. This colourway just approaches all of it sideways, without the red.
The Mid is assembled the way every Air Jordan 1 is: toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel cut as separate leather pieces, stitched over one another on a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole beneath. The mid collar carries padding around the ankle and sits low enough to clear the bone, which is why it needs far less breaking in than a high top. In black with college grey, the grey lands on the overlays where the light hits, so the panel structure stays visible in a way a full black pair loses. Women's lasts run narrower through the heel, so the fit is more secure at the back and slightly tighter across the forefoot than the equivalent men's pair.
