Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 May 2025 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Varsity Red/Black/White. In 1984 Nike signed Michael Jordan, and the deal turned into a business rather than an endorsement: Air Jordan became a line, then a brand of its own. The Air Jordan 1 is where that started, a high top built around a single player at a moment when the company was already holding roughly half the US athletic shoe market. Ruby takes the model's founding logic, a strong colour blocked against neutral leather, and gives it a deeper, jewel toned red instead of the primary version. The women's cut keeps the proportions the model is known for: the tall collar, the wing logo on the ankle, the long Swoosh running the length of the panel. It is the most recognisable shoe shape Nike has, in a colour that reads adult.
Utility
First: let the Ruby lead. Black straight leg denim, a black or charcoal knit, minimal metal, so the red is the only saturated thing in the frame. Second: soften it. Cream wide leg trousers and a camel coat, with the deep red working like an accessory colour rather than a sports one. The high collar means the ankle is supported and the shoe photographs best with a cuffed or cropped hem that shows the wing logo. Size true and lace fully if you want the structured look, or leave the top two eyelets loose for the classic open collar. Keep the leather conditioned, wipe salt and rain off promptly, and store it away from direct sunlight, since strong reds fade before neutrals do.
Influence
The Jordan story was sold as much by advertising as by basketball: Spike Lee directed and appeared as Mars Blackmon in the Air Jordan campaigns, and through basketball the shoe became a fixture of hip hop dress and then of mainstream American youth wardrobes. One correction is worth carrying, because it is repeated constantly and it is wrong: the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, not the Air Jordan 1. Nike paid the five thousand dollar per game fines and built the Banned campaign on the story. The myth stuck to the wrong shoe. What is true is that this silhouette turned a rookie signing into the most durable object in sneaker culture.
Construction
The Air Jordan 1 is a leather panelled high top over a rubber cupsole, and almost all of its character comes from how those panels are cut and coloured. Ruby is applied as the dominant tone with neutral relief, so the collar, the toe overlay and the Swoosh separate by colour rather than by texture. The high collar is padded and holds the ankle firmly out of the box, then relaxes and creases across the toe box the way leather always does, which is part of why this model ages the way collectors like. The cupsole underneath is a descendant of the rubber work Bowerman began in his kitchen. Deep reds show scuffing pale, so early care matters more here than on a black pair.
