Culture Note™
Designed by Christian Tresser and released on 29 September 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 97 line. This release has a leather upper in White/University Gold. The Air Max project began in 1987, when Nike stopped hiding its cushioning and put the pressurised gas unit on show, turning an engineering solution into the most recognisable design decision in sportswear. The 97 belongs to the run of models that pushed that idea furthest, wrapping the foot in continuous layered lines rather than separate panels. In this women's pairing, a white base carries University Gold, which sharpens the model's flowing construction into something closer to metallic trim than to a colour block. Style code DM8268 100 identifies it. It is a shoe that was designed to look fast standing still, which is exactly why it left running behind and became street clothing.
Gold on white asks for simple lines. Wear it with slim black trousers and a cream knit so the metallic reads as jewellery rather than sportswear, or with light wash straight jeans, a white tee and a tan leather jacket for a daytime look that keeps the warmth of the gold. It suits city days, travel and evenings out, and it is a poor pick for wet weather given the white base. Sizing on this model runs slightly snug through the enclosed midfoot, so try before you commit and consider a half size up if you have a high instep. Clean with a soft brush and mild soap, and never machine wash a visible Air unit.
The Air Max models became staples of mainstream youth dress from the 1980s onward, first as status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion in the United States, then across 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks that treated running shoes as everyday footwear. That shift is Nike's most complete cultural win, because it happened without any campaign asking for it. The brand's visible Air idea gave those shoes an instantly readable signature, and Just Do It, from 1988, gave the company a voice that worked outside sport entirely. The 97 arrived into that world already understood, which is why it has been continuously reissued and continuously restyled by people who never run.
Layered upper lines are the 97's identity, and they are the reason the shoe is more difficult to build than a panelled court shoe: every band has to line up along the length of the foot. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, is the cushioning platform and, since 1987, a visible design feature rather than a hidden one. On foot the shoe feels enclosed and supportive, closer to a wraparound than a lace up, and it needs a little breaking in around the collar. White with University Gold shows dirt quickly, so this is a colourway for people who will keep it clean rather than beat it in.
