Designed by Peter Moore and released on 27 January 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/University Red. Panda is not an official Nike colour name, it is what the wearers called the black and white split and the name stuck hard enough that the company had to accept it. That is a very Nike outcome for a company whose most famous slogan, Just Do It, came from an agency line in 1988 and ended up in the Smithsonian: the audience keeps renaming the work. This women's Dunk High takes the two-tone idea and stretches it up the ankle, so the black and white blocking runs through a full collar rather than stopping at the ankle bone. It is the most legible version of the most legible colourway, on the taller cut.
Look one: black wide-leg trousers with a white shirt, letting the shoe complete a hard monochrome and the collar break the leg line on purpose. Look two: mid-blue denim with a black leather jacket and a white tee, where the high collar adds structure that a low top cannot. High tops want a hem that either stops above the collar or stacks fully over it, never one that catches in the middle. Lace the top two eyelets loosely if you want the collar to flare. Clean the white panels first with mild soap and a soft brush, then the black separately, because black dye can transfer onto white leather if you use the same cloth across both.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and its basketball silhouettes became staples of mainstream American youth dress before returning across 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes. Black and white is the colourway that carried that transition furthest, because it belongs to no team, no season and no subculture in particular, which is precisely why everyone claimed it. The Swoosh, drawn by Carolyn Davidson and first used on 18 June 1971, is the only graphic on the shoe, and in two tones it does all the identification work. A high top in this palette reads formal by sneaker standards, which is a large part of its range.
Style code DD1399 103 places this in the women's Dunk High run. The High is a structurally different shoe to the Low: the collar rises above the ankle and carries its own padding, the lacing runs through extra eyelets, and the heel is supported by a taller counter, all of which make the shoe stiffer out of the box and more supportive once broken in. Black and white blocking exposes that construction, since every panel edge becomes a visible border between the two shades. Underfoot it stays flat and court-derived, following the Nike traction tradition that started with Bowerman's waffle iron experiments. On the women's last the shaft is cut a little closer through the ankle.
