Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 2 August 2022 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Turtle Dove/Blue Gray/Core White. Turtle Dove is one of the three names that built this entire vocabulary. It arrived with the Boost 350 in the first year of the adidas era, which began in February 2015 alongside the Yeezy Season 1 show at New York Fashion Week and continued with the 350 on 27 June 2015. A soft grey and cream knit named after a bird's plumage, it set the rule that colours here would come from nature and material rather than from fashion, and everything that followed, Oxford Tan, Moonrock, Beluga, Desert Rat, obeyed it. The 2022 run brought the original V1 silhouette back, narrower and lower than the V2 most people know.
Utility
Grey and cream is the softest palette the line ever made and the easiest to dress around. Recipe one: cream wide leg trousers and a grey marl crewneck, a full tonal fit where the shoe simply completes the gradient. Recipe two: mid wash denim with a white shirt worn open over a tee, where the pale knit keeps a classic outfit relaxed. It suits daytime, travel and any loose dress code. The V1 runs narrower than the V2, so wide feet should try before buying, and take your true size otherwise. Pale knit shows everything, so brush after each wear, treat marks immediately with cold water, and never let a Boost midsole near direct heat.
Influence
This is one of the pairs that started modern drop culture. Small quantities, long queues and an instant resale market, all around a shoe with no logo on it, which forced people to learn a silhouette instead of reading a badge. From here the line grew into one of the most commercially successful signature partnerships in sneaker history, with GQ calling these the most influential sneakers in 2016. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, stating the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, so later runs of founding colourways sit at the end of that story.
Construction
The upper is Primeknit, machine knitted as one piece, and on a pale two tone pair the knit does something the darker colourways hide: you can see the yarn transition from grey to cream as a gradient rather than a line. The V1 adds a suede style heel detail that gives the back of the shoe structure the knit cannot provide on its own. Below sits adidas Boost, expanded TPU pellet foam whose speckled white sidewall belongs naturally to this palette, over a rubber outsole. There is no visible logo, which in the first year of this line was a genuinely unusual decision for a mass release sneaker.
