Released on 1 January 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Court Green/Cloud White/Gum. The Gazelle started as a training shoe, a suede low that adidas built for athletes moving indoors and across surfaces, and it became one of the brand's most durable shapes precisely because it was never specialised enough to date. This pair pairs Court Green with Footwear White, using two of adidas's own colour names, and the effect is a deep, slightly muted green upper with white stripes and a white sole. Green is the colour that ties the Gazelle back to its sports club origins without shouting a team affiliation, and it is the shade the model wears most naturally after the famous reds and blues. It reads as archive rather than seasonal.
Two builds. Straight leg indigo denim with a short break, a cream knit and white socks just visible, so the green sits between the two neutrals. Or an all navy or grey fit where the green becomes the only warm departure, which works well in autumn. The Gazelle runs long and narrow, so half a size down works for most and true to size for wide feet. Spray the suede with a protector before the first wear, brush the nap back up with a rubber suede brush after each few wears, and clean the white sole edge with a magic sponge before dirt sets rather than after.
The Gazelle sits alongside the Superstar, the Stan Smith and the Spezial in the group of adidas shoes that became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing, a wardrobe adidas served rather than invented. That is the recurring shape of this brand's cultural life: Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and the endorsement deal followed, the first between a musical act and an athletic company. The Gazelle's version of that story is quieter and longer, carried by British music scenes and football culture across decades. Court green is a colour with that history attached, the kind of tone that reads as a specific decade to anyone who was there.
Suede over a slim last, and the nap does the heavy lifting on the way this shoe looks. Court green suede holds shadow in the grain, so the shoe changes tone as it moves, which is why suede Gazelles look richer in person than in photographs. The Three Stripes are stitched to the flank in white, an application that goes back to the stripes being structural reinforcement rather than branding, and the Trefoil sits on the heel as the mark of adidas Originals. Underneath is a thin, flat sole unit that keeps the foot low and gives you ground feel over cushioning. Expect fast creasing across the toe and a shoe that softens noticeably in the first fortnight.
