Culture Note™
Released on 15 January 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a nylon upper in Preloved Ink/Night Indigo/Grey Six. Preloved Ink is the Samba OG in a deep, washed out blue black, a colour named to suggest something already lived in. That naming convention tells you what this shoe is for. The Samba was never designed to look new: it is an indoor football silhouette with a thin sole and a suede toe, a shape that improves as it creases and scuffs. Running it in a faded ink tone simply moves the shoe forward to where it was always heading. adidas Originals has built a habit of releasing colourways that skip the break in period visually, which suits a model that people buy expecting to wear it into the ground.
Faded ink is a dark neutral that reads warmer than black. Recipe one: black or charcoal wide leg trousers with a navy overshirt, keeping everything in a cool dark register where the shoe finishes the line without ending it abruptly. Recipe two: washed indigo denim and a cream knit, where the ink upper picks up the jeans and the cream lifts the outfit. Good for offices, evenings and travel, and the most forgiving Samba for monsoon commuting. The shape runs narrow and slightly long, so try true to size. Brush the suede toe dry in one direction, keep it out of standing water, and clean before marks set rather than scrubbing later.
adidas has run India with local ambassadors rather than imported ones, signing Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh in 2015 and fronting a cricket campaign with Virat Kohli before he left for Puma in 2017. Reported 2018 figures put adidas at 436 company owned and franchise stores across the country with operating revenue of about 10.97 billion rupees in 2017-18. That footprint matters for a shoe like this: the Samba is the model that converts a casual buyer into an Originals customer, and a dark, easy, low maintenance colourway is the version that survives Indian streets and Indian weather.
Leather quarter, shaped suede toe overlay, serrated Three Stripes stitched down the flank, and the thin flat sole with a slight toe spring the shape carries from indoor football. Preloved Ink runs the dark blue tone across the shoe with minimal contrast, so panelling separates by material rather than by colour and the whole thing reads as one mass at distance. Dark blues are the most practical Samba finish after black: scuffs dull rather than announce themselves, and city dust does not register. The suede toe is still the panel that changes most, darkening where the nap crushes, which on this colourway simply deepens the faded effect.
