Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 January 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black-Turbo Green-University Red. The Jordan 1 became a canvas the moment it stopped being equipment. Peter Moore designed it with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, expecting about 3 million dollars in sales across three years; the first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million dollars, and from that point the panelling became a grid that designers could not leave alone. A multicolour Mid is the most literal version of that idea: instead of one story told in two tones, every panel gets its own voice. It is the opposite of the disciplined Chicago blocking the brand is known for, and it only works because the underlying shape is so familiar that you can scramble it and still read it instantly.
Let the shoe be the pattern. Recipe one: plain black trousers or denim, a solid white tee, a single colour jacket picked from the shoe rather than added to it, and plain white socks. Recipe two: grey sweatpants, a plain heavyweight hoodie in one of the shoe's quieter tones, nothing printed anywhere. Do not add a graphic top: multicolour footwear and printed clothing cancel each other. Mids want a hem at the collar so the blocking stays visible. Best in daylight and in spring. Clean panel by panel with a barely damp cloth, since aggressive cleaning can move dye from a dark block into a pale one.
Treating this silhouette as a surface is now an industry in itself. Jordan Brand's collaboration programme runs across streetwear, luxury and music, with named partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side, Travis Scott through Cactus Jack on the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, and Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side. Every one of those projects works by rearranging elements everyone already knows. A multicolour general release is the house doing that to itself, without a guest name attached and without the resale premium that comes with one.
The Jordan 1 upper is divided into distinct overlays, a toe panel, quarter, eyestay, collar and swoosh, and multicolour treatments exist to expose that division. The Mid cut wraps the ankle without reaching the original high collar height, which means one fewer large panel to colour and a tighter composition overall. Mixed colour uppers demand more of the finishing than single tone ones do, because dye bleed and edge paint mismatch are immediately visible where two blocks meet. Jordan Brand publishes no per colourway material sheet, so inspect the seams and the edge paint in hand, and check how the lightest panel is likely to hold up against the darkest.
