Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 June 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Grey Fog/Bleached Coral. Stage Haze runs a dusty, smoked purple grey across the Retro High OG in grade school sizing, a colourway that sounds like lighting rather than sport, which tells you where the shoe is aimed. The silhouette itself is the founding one: Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew the Air Jordan 1 for Michael Jordan after Nike signed him on 26 October 1984, the shoe was produced for him on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985. Nike expected about 3 million dollars over three years and got a sell out of 50,000 pairs and more than 150 million dollars instead. Retro High OG means the original proportions, the tall collar and the Wings logo, rebuilt for an audience that was not alive for any of it.
Smoky purple sits between neutral and colour, so use it either way. Grey sweats and a black hoodie let it read as a warm neutral, while cream trousers and a white tee push the violet forward and make the shoe the focal point. Keep the rest of the palette flat, since patterned clothing kills a hazy tone. Lace fully for the classic High stance or loosen the top pair to let the collar flare. Grade school sizing runs below adult numbering, so check the conversion. Brush dry after wear, avoid soaking the upper because dusty pigments dry unevenly, and store them upright out of direct sunlight where a colour like this fades fastest.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball colliding with hip hop, and colourways named for stagecraft rather than teams are the current form of that drift. Spike Lee directed the first campaigns playing Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, putting the shoe into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried it into music. Jordan Brand now works with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS and musicians including Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin and Nicki Minaj. The High OG is the shape all of those partners keep returning to, so a grade school pair in a moody tone is a legitimate entry into the same lineage rather than a watered down version of it.
The 1 predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so the ride is a rubber cupsole and firm foam, flat and direct underfoot. The High OG keeps the collar above the ankle with the padded tongue and the full eyelet run, so it holds the foot rather than letting it move. A hazy purple grey is a shade that shifts under different light, looking almost brown indoors and clearly violet in daylight, which is a colourway that rewards being seen outside. Grade school construction follows the adult panel layout at smaller scale. Because dusty tones are pigment heavy, keep them away from harsh cleaners that strip the surface and leave patches lighter than the rest.
