Released on 1 October 2022 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Deep Royal Blue/White/Sport Red/Gum Light Brown. SB is the Nike line that answers to skateboarding rather than to a sport federation, and it has always drawn on things from outside the building: local scenes, city palettes, borrowed graphics. That instinct has cost the company before, most publicly when Nike SB put Minor Threat's album art on a 2005 tour flyer, drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and issued an apology. This Dunk Low is the warmer version of the same reflex, a skate shoe dressed in a city's baseball colours. Los Angeles Dodgers blue and white reads as civic before it reads as sport, the way a team's colours do once they have been in a place long enough. On a low skate silhouette that lands as hometown allegiance rather than as merchandise.
Two recipes. Loose mid blue denim, a white tee and a navy zip hoodie, keeping every shade in the outfit inside the shoe's own two colours. Or cream carpenter trousers with a washed grey crewneck, where the blue becomes the only saturated thing you are wearing. This is a walking, standing, all day shoe rather than a formal one, and the padded collar makes it comfortable on long days in the city. Sizing on this shape runs slightly long, so try your usual size before going up. For care, treat the white panels first with a soft brush and a foam cleaner, never a wet soak, and keep the pair out of hard monsoon rain because water marks show badly on a light midsole.
From the 1980s onward Nike stopped being read as athletic equipment and started being read as status. Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models moved out of gyms and into urban and hip hop dress, then came back through the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. Nike SB is the branch that stayed closest to a subculture instead of a stadium, and the city colourway is its native language: shoes that mean something specific to people from one place and read as good colour to everyone else. A Dodgers blue Dunk works on both registers at once, which is exactly why this shape refuses to go out of rotation.
Blue and white is a two part colourway, and on a low Dunk that means the eyestay, the Swoosh and the collar do the dividing while the toe and quarter carry the field colour. Read the panels, because this shape is nothing but overlays, and every seam is a place a skate shoe either holds or splits. SB builds are made with that in mind, padded where a board hits the foot and reinforced where the shoe drags, which is also why people who have never stood on a deck find the line easy to wear all day. The practical note on this pair is contrast: white panels record scuffs immediately while blue absorbs them, so one half will look worn long before the other.
