Designed by Peter Moore and released on 27 July 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/University Blue/Obsidian. UNC is the colourway that predates the brand. Michael Jordan played for North Carolina before Nike signed him as a Chicago rookie on 26 October 1984, and the university's pale blue has stayed in the palette ever since, one of the few Jordan colours that has nothing to do with the Bulls. Jordan Brand now outfits the North Carolina programme along with Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, so this is a live relationship rather than a nostalgic one. On a grade school 1 Low it becomes the most approachable version of that history: light blue and white, no black anywhere, a shoe that reads like a summer uniform rather than a collector's object.
Pale blue and white is a warm weather palette, full stop. Recipe one: white shorts, a light grey tee and white crew socks, the simplest fit that lets the blue overlays read clearly. Recipe two: light wash straight jeans with a white oxford shirt worn open over a tee, which takes the same shoe to dinner without changing its character. Skip navy, it flattens the university blue. Low cut suits a cuffed or cropped hem. The real discipline here is maintenance: two pale colours show everything, so keep them off wet streets, clean the midsole before marks set and never let dark denim sit against damp white leather.
College basketball is where Jordan Brand's reach past the NBA started, and it now extends far beyond: sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team from 2016, sponsor of Paris Saint Germain from 2018, and signed athletes across the NFL, MLB and WNBA. UNC blue is the thread connecting all of it back to a player before he was a brand. The 1 meanwhile carries its own cultural record, from Spike Lee directing the earliest Nike advertising as Mars Blackmon to references in records by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and a collecting culture that now supports a market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars.
Leather upper on a low collar with the University Blue on the overlays and white filling the quarter and midsole, which is the cleanest two colour arrangement this silhouette runs. Grade school builds are lighter and softer than adult pairs through the collar and forefoot, which is the right trade for a shoe that will be worn constantly. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, firm and close to the ground. Two pale colours mean there is nowhere for dirt to hide, so this is the pair that most rewards a protectant spray before the first wear, a soft brush after dusty days and a foam cleaner kept in reach for the midsole.
