Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/Chile Red/White colourway. Red is not a colour choice on this line, it is the house identity. The Chicago red, black and white palette functions as a brand code in itself, alongside the number 23 and the Jumpman, and any red Air Jordan 1 is read against that first. Chille Red pulls the temperature down from a pure gym red into something deeper and dustier, which changes who the shoe is for: less courtside, more everyday. The 1 arrived publicly on 1 April 1985 after Nike gambled on a rookie rather than an established star, because the company was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face it owned. This Mid is the descendant that took that gamble into ordinary wardrobes.
Two recipes. First, black straight leg trousers and a black crew with a cream cap, so the shoe is the only colour in the frame and the fit reads deliberate. Second, mid blue washed denim, a white oxford shirt worn open over a tee, and the red picking up any red in a bag or a watch strap. Red Mids are weekend and evening shoes in most Indian offices, and they photograph better under warm light than fluorescent. Keep the laces clean, since discoloured white laces age a red pair faster than the upper does. Rotate them rather than wearing daily, and let them dry fully out of the sun after rain.
Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop, and red pairs are the ones that show up in that story most often. Spike Lee's advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoe into film language before the resale market existed. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in their music. The 1 is also the shoe that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, anchoring a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Wearing a red Mid is claiming that lineage without paying auction prices for an original pair.
The Mid collar is the whole argument here. It closes around the ankle without the High's commitment, so a deep red upper reads as one continuous block of colour from toe to collar rather than being cut in half by a sock or a cuff. Panel seams break that block just enough to give the red some shape under daylight. A saturated red will always be the loudest thing you wear, so the shoe wants a plain upper body around it. Colour this deep also shows salt lines and rain marks clearly, so wipe them off the same day rather than letting them dry in. Store the pair away from direct sun, which flattens strong reds over time.
