Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 May 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in University Red/Black/White. This is a grade school release, which is not a detail to skip past: the Air Jordan 1 has been a shoe that children argued over since the mid 1980s, and its youth history is not entirely comfortable. In the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them outright, which tells you how much status the silhouette carried in a hallway. A Marvel co branded execution in GS sizing takes that same object and returns it to the audience it always had, but through comics rather than the court. The name Next Chapter is doing the obvious work: an origin story shoe, told again for whoever is getting their first pair.
Utility
Recipe one: dark denim, a plain white tee and a red or navy hooded sweatshirt, letting the shoe carry every graphic in the outfit. Recipe two: black track pants with a grey crew and a bomber, a school and weekend fit where the high collar keeps the ankle covered. Occasion wise this is a daily shoe for a young wearer, and the high cut gives more ankle coverage than a low. Buy with a little growing room but not a full size, since an oversized high top rolls at the heel. Wipe printed or graphic panels gently with a damp cloth only, keep them out of the washing machine, and store dry and cool, since midsole materials degrade with age.
Influence
Jordan Brand's collaboration programme reaches across streetwear, luxury and music, with partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, plus Travis Scott on the 1, 4 and 6 and musicians including Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. A comic book partner sits in a different register from all of those: it is aimed at the beginning of a collector's life rather than the middle of it. That matters commercially, because the Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and the market it anchors is valued at roughly 2 billion dollars.
Construction
The Retro High OG build is the original one, and it does not change for GS sizing: separate leather panels for toe, eyestay, quarter and heel, stitched over one another on a foam midsole, a rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle, and the Wings logo on the tall collar. Grade school pairs run on a smaller last and are typically built lighter, but the panel layout and collar height are identical, which is why they look right next to an adult pair. A high top needs a break in period for anyone: lace loosely through the top eyelets at first so the collar folds around the ankle instead of pressing into it.
