Origin
Designed by Bill Bowerman and part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in White/Light Smoke Grey/Black/Sail. Before Nike was a basketball or a running company in the public mind it was a company that signed the athlete nobody else would. Ilie Nastase, the tennis player, was its first professional athlete endorser, and Steve Prefontaine its first track endorser. The Blazer belongs to that early, court adjacent era of Nike design, when a shoe was a leather upper, a flat sole and a very large Swoosh, and the Mid 77 Vintage is the version built to look its age on purpose. White with Light Grey is the most restrained way to buy it: the grey Swoosh sits softly against the white upper rather than shouting, so the silhouette does the talking. It is the Blazer at its most classic and least costumed.
Utility
The Blazer Mid is the most versatile Nike silhouette for people who dress like adults. Recipe one: mid blue straight leg jeans, a white oxford shirt and a navy overshirt, where the grey Swoosh keeps the shoe from reading as gym kit. Recipe two: charcoal wool trousers with a grey crewneck and a black coat, a cold weather look where the low contrast shoe finishes it without a break. Good for offices with a relaxed code, dinners and long walking days. It runs slightly narrow, so a half size up helps wide feet. Nike's route into culture ran through basketball and hip hop after the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns, and by then the Blazer was already old enough to be retro. The company that built it went public in 1980 holding roughly half the US athletic shoe market, moved to Beaverton in 1990 and opened its first Niketown in Portland the same year. The Blazer is what Nike looked like before all of that.
Construction
Vintage in this model's name refers to the treatment rather than the year: an aged finish on the midsole and a softer, more collapsible upper than a modern court shoe would carry. That means it creases early and looks better for it, which is unusual and worth knowing before you panic at the first fold. The Mid collar sits above the ankle without the padding a basketball shoe carries, so it moves with the foot rather than bracing it. The outsole follows the grip first tradition Bowerman began with his waffle iron. White and light grey is a low contrast pairing that reads clean at distance, and the exposed white midsole is the part that ages fastest.
