Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 February 2021 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Sail/Varsity Red/Black. Two rarities are stacked in this one shoe. The first is the Chicago colourway, the red, white and black language the Air Jordan 1 was launched in after Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984, a signing that became an entire brand rather than an endorsement. The second is the Friends and Family designation: a version of a Trophy Room collaboration made outside the general release, distinguished here by blue laces rather than by a different upper. That small substitution is the whole point. In a category where the retail pair is already scarce, a lace colour becomes the marker separating what was sold from what was given, which is the most concentrated form of sneaker collecting there is.
First: dress around the red, not against it. Black or dark indigo straight denim with a cuff, a white tee, a black jacket, so the Chicago blocking reads clean and the blue laces are noticed by the people who will notice them. Second: full white and grey, which makes the shoe the only saturated element and pushes attention to the lacing. Given what this pair is, most owners will rotate it lightly. If you do wear it, wear it dry, keep the original laces bagged if you swap in a spare for daily use, condition the leather, and store it in a cool dark place with the box, since packaging matters for a pair defined by provenance.
The Air Jordan 1 became culture through advertising as much as sport, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the campaigns that pushed the shoe from basketball into hip hop and then into general American youth dress. It also carries the most repeated error in sneaker history, worth correcting here: the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines and built the Banned campaign around it. Friends and Family pairs sit at the extreme end of what that mythology produced, objects whose value comes from restricted access rather than from anything you can see on the shoe.
Structurally this is the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG as it has always been built: leather panels cut into the familiar toe, quarter and collar blocks, a stitched Swoosh running the length of the side, a padded high collar, and a rubber cupsole beneath, all of it descended from the rubber sole work Bowerman started at the very beginning of the company. The Chicago palette assigns red to the toe and quarter with white and black relief. The blue laces are the Friends and Family tell, so they are the single component you keep original: swap them and the pair loses its identity. Leather of this cut creases across the toe box early, and that creasing is expected rather than a fault.
