Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 November 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Varsity Red/Wolf Grey. A collaboration on the Retro High is the brand handing its most protected asset to someone else, and Jordan Brand only does that with partners it treats as peers: Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side, Travis Scott with the Cactus Jack 1, 4 and 6 on the music side. This Union LA edition sits in that programme, built on the 1985 proportions Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore. Black Toe is one of the oldest colour codes in the line, a red, white and black arrangement with the toe blacked out, which makes it the natural base for a partner who wants to work with history rather than around it.
Two ways to wear it. First, plain black trousers and a black tee, giving a busy collaborative colourway a completely blank frame so the shoe is legible. Second, mid wash denim cuffed once with a white tee and a work jacket, the classic Black Toe fit that lets the red and white do the talking. Do not add another loud element: this shoe is already the statement. Highs want a hem above the collar, so cuff denim once. Keep the pair dry, brush after every wear, store it with paper inside and out of direct sun, and clean the white panels before any mark has a chance to set.
Collaborations are how Air Jordan stayed current after the athlete stopped playing. The line's cultural claim came from the collision of basketball and hip hop, from Spike Lee's advertising with Lee as Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into their music. Limited partner editions now sit at the sharp end of the collecting market that grew out of that, a resale economy valued at roughly 2 billion dollars with several billion more projected. This is a pair bought as much for what it signals as for what it is.
NRG builds are where the line allows itself material and finish choices the general release would not carry, so read this shoe panel by panel: toe, quarter, swoosh, eyestay, collar and tongue can each behave differently, and that is the point of a collaboration rather than a defect. The Black Toe arrangement puts the dark section where scuffing is worst, which is practical as well as historic, while the white panels take the visible wear. Clean the white the same day it marks, dry brush any specialty material rather than wiping it, and test any product on a hidden area first, since mixed finishes react differently to the same cleaner.
