Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 May 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in black/white-university red. Homage to Home points at Chicago, the city whose red, black and white became Air Jordan's house palette independent of the team. Nike signed Michael Jordan there on 26 October 1984, when he was a rookie rather than a superstar and Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas, and the first shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985. The NRG designation marks this as a special make up rather than a general release, which is how Jordan Brand signals that a pair is carrying an idea rather than just a colourway. On a Retro High OG, with Peter Moore's original geometry and the Wings mark of the earliest era, the tribute lands on the exact shoe that started it.
Two recipes. First, all black, wide leg trousers and a heavy black hoodie, so the shoe's special make up detailing is the only thing with anything to say. Second, raw indigo denim with a white tee and a varsity or coach jacket, a straightforwardly American fit that matches the reference without over explaining it. High tops need a hem that stacks over the collar or finishes clear above it. Size true to length. Protect before first wear, clean each material with its own method, keep printed detail away from solvents, and store the pair with trees so the high collar keeps its shape.
Chicago is where Air Jordan collided with hip hop and became something bigger than sportswear. 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all put Jordan and his sneakers into their records, and Spike Lee directed Nike's early advertising while playing Mars Blackmon in it, which moved the shoe into film language. That combination created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with a resale market now valued at roughly two billion dollars. A shoe explicitly built as a homage to the city is Jordan Brand acknowledging that the mythology is geographic as much as it is athletic.
Retro High OG means faithful reproduction rather than modernisation: the 1985 panel breaks, the full ankle collar and the Wings logo that predates the Jumpman's arrival at the third model, with Nike Air cushioning underfoot as it has been since the second. NRG builds usually carry their message in material and detailing, which means additional printed, embroidered or contrast elements that are more fragile than the leather around them. Clean those areas last and most gently. A tribute make up on a high top also puts more visual weight at the collar, so lace it fully rather than leaving the top eyelets open, since the shoe was designed to be read closed. Expect toe creasing from the first week.
