    Culture Note™

Released on 10 May 2022 and part of adidas's Forum line. This release has a leather upper. The Forum '84 Low is the archive basketball shoe adidas keeps returning to because its details are unusually specific: the ankle strap, the X shaped lacing panel and the high walled cupsole all come from a period when court shoes were engineered to look engineered. Running an M&M's collaboration across it is pure candy shop logic, and the Blue execution picks the most recognisable single colour in that confectionery lineup. adidas has always been comfortable letting outside partners rewrite its silhouettes, having effectively invented the modern designer sneaker partnership with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney from 2004 before extending the idea far beyond fashion.
A bright blue collaboration shoe should be the only loud thing you are wearing. Recipe one: mid grey sweatpants and a white tee, cuffs stopping above the ankle strap so the strap stays visible, which is the detail worth showing. Recipe two: black straight jeans with a navy crewneck, using the darker palette to make the blue read as saturated rather than as sporty. Leather and synthetic panels clean differently, so use a damp cloth and mild soap on the leather and a soft brush on the trims. Keep the midsole sidewall clean, since a chunky white walled cupsole shows scuffing first. Fasten the strap properly instead of leaving it loose.
adidas has spent forty years proving that its archive is a platform other people can broadcast from. That began with Run-DMC releasing My Adidas in 1986 without a commission, then holding their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden, which produced the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Since then adidas has handed silhouettes to designers, musicians and, in cases like this, to brands from entirely outside sport. The Forum is the shoe most often chosen for it, because its panelling gives a partner room to work. A confectionery collaboration is that logic at its most playful, sold to people who collect stories as much as shoes.
The '84 Low keeps the original Forum architecture without the high collar: a leather forefoot and quarter, the distinctive lacing panel, an adjustable ankle strap and a chunky cupsole with a raised sidewall. That strap is functional heritage rather than decoration, since it was there to lock the foot during lateral movement, and on the low cut it still tightens the fit meaningfully. The Three Stripes appear as structural banding, which is how adidas has used the mark since buying it from Karhu Sports in 1952. A collaboration execution like this puts its identity into the colour blocking, branding placement and trims rather than into the build, so the Blue is the differentiator and the shoe underneath is authentically Forum.
