The 6900 is the round-faced G-Shock, the one with the three small windows above the display, and it is the case that carried the line through its streetwear decades. Everything it does rests on what Kikuo Ibe solved for the DW-5000C, which launched in April 1983 after roughly two years of work and about 200 prototypes. His breakthrough was structural rather than material: suspend the module inside the case like a ball so that impact energy never reaches it, instead of trying to armour it. The 6900 inherits that architecture in a rounder shell with a bezel that takes graphics and colour better than the square does, which is precisely why collaborators kept choosing it.
Two builds. First, full streetwear: baggy denim or cargos, an oversized hoodie, chunky sneakers, the round case sitting outside the cuff where it belongs. Second, gym and travel: shorts, a technical tee, the backlight and stopwatch earning their keep more than the styling does. Wear it with a little slack so the case can move under impact. Rinse the resin after sweat and seawater and dry it before storage. Keep it out of long direct sun, which is what actually degrades resin, and replace the bezel and strap when they finally go rather than retiring the watch.
G-Shock did not start hot. Japanese sales were slow and the early buyers were construction workers and police. It broke in the United States after Casio America ran a commercial using a DW-5200C as a hockey puck, which was accused of false advertising until a television station tested it live on air and the watch survived. Skateboarding took it up for durability and its fit with baggy clothing, hip-hop followed, and by 1998 there were over 200 models and 19 million units sold. Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Eminem and Snoop Dogg are documented wearers. Kith built a rainbow-finish GM-6900 for its tenth anniversary in 2021.
Shock Resist is the whole engineering claim, a floating module inside a resin case, and it is the reason a G-Shock survives what it survives. Casio has demonstrated the limits publicly: a Guinness World Record confirmed in December 2017 involved a G-Shock surviving a 24.97 tonne truck driving over it. On the 6900 the round bezel is a wearable part rather than a decorative one, and it takes scuffs that buff back. In use, the practical effect is that you stop managing the watch. It goes to the gym, on flights, into monsoon rain and onto building sites, and the module is untouched by any of it.
