Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 November 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a textile upper in Black/White/Wolf Grey/Light Lemon Twist. Nike Grind is the company's programme for recycling manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, and the Scrap line is that idea made visible on the upper rather than hidden in a track surface. Instead of matched panels cut from one hide, a Scrap build assembles offcuts, so the shoe is deliberately mismatched and no two pairs behave identically. Light Lemon Twist is the shade that carries this one, a pale acidic yellow set against neutral panels. It is Nike arguing that leftovers are a design position rather than an apology, which for a company founded on a coach improvising with a waffle iron is entirely in character.
Fit one: workwear register, a canvas chore jacket, straight brown or ecru trousers and a plain tee, where mismatched panels look like part of a hard-wearing wardrobe. Fit two: grey sweats top to bottom with the pale yellow accent as the only colour anywhere, which stops the mixed materials from competing with anything else. Avoid patterned clothing entirely with this one. Because the panels use different materials, clean them separately: dry brush the textured sections, use a barely damp cloth with mild soap on the smooth ones, and never wet the whole shoe at once. The pale yellow will mark first, so protect it and keep the pair off wet ground.
Nike Grind sits alongside Flywire, Lunarlite and Dri-FIT in the company's engineering vocabulary, but it is the one with a public argument attached, since it turns waste back into product and surfaces. Putting that logic on the upper of a Dunk rather than into an anonymous running track is the interesting move, because it asks a sneaker buyer to accept irregularity in a market that usually punishes it. That sits within Nike's longer arc from sport into culture, where its low tops became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward and then returned through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes.
Style code DC9723 001 places this in the Scrap execution of the Dunk Low. The point of the build is material variety: panels differ in texture and tone across the same shoe and between the two feet, with exposed edges and contrast stitching left visible rather than finished away. That makes the panelled Dunk upper an advantage, since the silhouette is already divided into sections that can each come from a different source. Light Lemon Twist appears as the accent that ties the mismatch together. Underfoot the platform is the flat, court-derived Dunk base, in the traction tradition that starts with Bowerman pouring rubber into a waffle iron. Expect the shoe to soften unevenly as the different materials break in at different rates.
