The AE 1 is adidas basketball drawn without restraint, an aggressively sculpted, asymmetric shoe that looks nothing like the low, flat court silhouettes the brand is usually remembered for. Ascent is a colourway within that first signature model line. adidas has held real ground in basketball since the Superstar of 1969, whose moulded rubber shell toe was made to protect players' feet under the basket and which a reported 75 percent of NBA players were wearing by 1973. The AE 1 is the opposite design answer to the same problem, protection through moulded geometry and layered support rather than through a rubber cap. Style code IG6668 identifies this pair, which matters given how many colourways the model has carried.
On court, this is a shoe for guards who cut hard and want the forefoot to feel planted, so lace it fully through the top eyelet and wear a cushioned basketball sock, because the fit is designed to be locked rather than roomy. Off court, the volume needs a wide leg or a loose tapered trouser that stacks slightly over the collar, with a plain heavyweight tee so the shoe carries the outfit. Do not try to slim the silhouette with skinny denim, since the shape will fight it. Keep a play pair and a wear pair separate if you can. Wipe the outsole clean before every indoor session, because dust on a court sole is what kills grip.
adidas basketball has had two distinct lives. The first ran through the Superstar, worn by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters, then adopted by hip hop and turned into a cultural object the company never planned. The second is the modern signature era, where adidas has backed individual players with individual shoes, including James Harden as a signature basketball athlete. The AE 1 belongs to the second, and it has been unusual within it, a performance shoe that people bought to wear rather than only to play in, which is a rarer outcome now than it was in the shell toe era.
A modern signature basketball shoe is built around containment: a wide, flared base for lateral stability, a wrapped midfoot to stop the foot sliding under a hard cut, and a forefoot cushioning unit that has to absorb landing without going soft under a heavy player. The AE 1 does that with an exaggerated moulded midsole shape rather than a slim court profile, which is why it looks bulbous from the side and sits high off the floor. The Three Stripes appear here as structure inside the panelling rather than as a stripe overlay, and the three angled bars of the Badge of Sport, introduced in 1997, are the correct mark for performance product like this.
