Released on 1 July 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a satin upper in Better Scarlet/Cloud White/Gum. An Olympic Pack Gazelle Indoor is adidas leaning on the part of its history that predates almost everything else it sells. The company's first world stage moment was Olympic: the Dassler brothers persuaded sprinter Jesse Owens to wear their handmade spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and the Trefoil, designed in 1971, was launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics and carried the brand until 1997 before becoming the mark of Originals. Better Scarlet is a saturated red suede that sits in that Games colour tradition, where national and event palettes are bold by necessity. On an indoor court silhouette it produces a shoe that is archival in shape and ceremonial in colour, which is a more interesting combination than either would be alone.
Recipe one: off white or ecru wide leg trousers with a navy knit, where the scarlet is the only saturated element and the outfit stays deliberately plain around it. Recipe two: black straight leg denim with a black bomber, a hard monochrome frame that turns the shoe into the entire statement. Gazelle lasts run narrow and long, so a half size down suits slim feet and the suede widens with wear. Keep them dry, because a saturated red suede marks badly and can transfer when wet. Brush the nap in one direction with a crepe brush, lift scuffs with a suede eraser rather than water, and apply a colourless protector before you wear them out for the first time.
adidas's Olympic association is not sponsorship storytelling, it is the origin of the company's reputation, from Owens in 1936 through the Trefoil launched for Munich. The Gazelle Indoor sits at the other end of that history, a functional court shoe that terrace and casual dressing culture rescued from obscurity long after the Superstar and the Stan Smith had become the base layer of European casual wardrobes. Putting the two together, an event pack framing on an archive court silhouette, is adidas doing what Originals exists to do: selling the past as a product without pretending the shoe is anything other than a suede trainer.
Suede upper, thin low profile build and a soft rubber outsole is the Gazelle Indoor formula, with the sole compound chosen because indoor court shoes have to grip polished wood without marking it. The Three Stripes are stitched through the sidewall, structural as well as visual, a role the mark has held since adidas bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952. Pack releases usually change the finishing details, the branding treatment and the insole or heel graphics rather than the last, so the fit and the ride are the standard Gazelle Indoor experience: flat, direct and barely cushioned. Better Scarlet suede burnishes lighter along the toe and the flex crease, so a heavily worn pair reads as two tone without anyone designing it that way.
