Released on 15 December 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Wonder White/Silver Metallic. Black upper, wonder white stripes, cut on the women's last. This is the inverse of the Samba everyone knows: instead of a pale shoe with a dark stripe, you get a dark shoe with the stripe reading as the only light on it. Wonder white is a soft off white rather than a bright one, which keeps the contrast from going harsh and makes the whole thing look worn in from the first day. adidas has built its entire identity on that stripe since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and reversing the values is the simplest, most effective thing the brand can do to a silhouette this minimal.
Black and off white is the most versatile Samba there is. Wear it with a midi skirt and a fine knit for something that stays casual without going sporty, or with black wide leg trousers and a leather jacket for a harder line where the stripes become the only break in the outfit. The women's last runs narrow and long, so a half size down is the usual call unless you have a wide foot. Brush the suede toe dry, wipe the leather with a damp cloth, and refresh the black with a suede specific conditioner when it starts looking grey, since black naps dull faster than they scuff.
The women's side of adidas Originals has been shaped by designers as much as athletes: Stella McCartney has worked with the brand since 2004, and the collaboration programme adidas effectively invented runs through Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3, Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. That history is why an Originals silhouette on a women's last is not treated as a shrunken men's shoe. The Trefoil, designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, marks this part of the range, the product bought for how it looks and what it signals rather than for a sport.
A black leather upper with a suede toe overlay and off white Three Stripes stitched down the quarter, on the low flat outsole this shape has always used. Practically, black is the most wearable finish adidas offers here. It hides city dust, it does not record every crease the way white leather does, and it lets you wear the shoe on days when the weather is against you. The suede toe is still the vulnerable part and still needs to stay dry. The low profile means minimal cushioning and a close, planted stance, so treat it as a shoe for walking and standing rather than for distance.
