Released on 2 April 2024 and part of the SL72 line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Blue. The SL72 carries the year adidas changed how it looked at itself. The Trefoil, three leaves over three stripes, was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, and the SL family belongs to that same slim, lightweight running era. The RS version is the modern reissue, rebuilt so the shape can be worn now rather than displayed in a case. In black and white it becomes the most graphic version available: a dark upper cut by three pale stripes and a pale sole, with nothing else competing for your eye. This is adidas at its most legible, a shoe you can identify from the far end of a station platform without seeing a single word of branding.
The slim profile is the point, so dress it slim. Straight leg black jeans with a white tee and a bomber keeps everything in the shoe's own two colours. Or push it dressier with grey pleated trousers and a black knit, where the low sole slides under a hem the way a chunky trainer never will. Sizing on retro runners tends to run narrow through the midfoot, so consider going up a half size if you have a wide foot or wear thicker socks. Clean the upper with a soft brush and mild soap, keep water away from any suede panels, and use an eraser block on the sidewall to bring the white sole back.
adidas has two logo systems and they mean different things. The three angled bars, introduced in 1997 by creative director Peter Moore, mark performance and corporate product. The Trefoil marks Originals, the lifestyle side. A reissued Munich era runner sits firmly under the Trefoil, which is the brand admitting that its own history is now the product. That admission was earned in culture, not in the lab: adidas got a second life when hip hop adopted the Superstar wholesale, and terrace and casual dressing across Europe made Originals silhouettes a base layer. Slim retro runners are the quieter branch of that same tradition.
A low, narrow running shape with a lightweight upper, contrast Three Stripes along the quarter and a slim wedged sole that lifts the heel slightly above the toe. That geometry is the tell of the era: running shoes from this lineage were built to be light and close rather than cushioned and tall, so you get real ground feel and almost no stack. Black uppers on this shape are practical, hiding the marks that pale retro runners collect, while the white sole is the part that will show its age first. Treat it as a walking and wearing shoe, not as something to run in, because the underfoot technology sits decades behind adidas' current running range.
