Released on 9 December 2024 and part of the SL72 line. This release has a nylon upper in Green/Core White/Collegiate Green. Collegiate green is one of the oldest colours in the adidas book, a deep bottle green that sits somewhere between a sports club and a school, and on the SL72 RS it makes a seventies running shoe look like something inherited rather than bought. The 72 in the name points at the year the Trefoil arrived in public, since adidas designed the logo in 1971 and launched it for the 1972 Munich Olympics, and it stayed the company's only mark until the three angled bars took over in 1997. RS designates the reworked daily wear version rather than a strict reissue. Dark green makes the panel layout recede and the outline do the talking. No style code is listed here.
Deep green is a neutral that most people treat as a colour, which makes it useful. Wear it with mid grey trousers and a cream knit for a quiet, earthy outfit, or with washed indigo denim and a tan jacket when you want the green to pick up warmth from the leather. Keep it away from black, which flattens it, and away from other greens. The slim seventies sole gives limited cushioning, so it suits walking rather than standing all day. adidas Originals is the mechanism that turns retired product into current product, and it exists because the company's audience valued its archive more than its catalogue. Robert Louis-Dreyfus, who ran adidas from 1994 to 2001 and quadrupled revenue to 5.84 billion euros, rebuilt it as a marketing company, and reissuing the archive was part of that. The demand had already been created without permission, since adidas running and court shoes had become the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing. A dark upper on a busy silhouette is a simplifying move. The SL72 keeps seventies running geometry, a slim sole, a low heel, a long thin profile and a multi panel upper with overlays at the toe and heel where a runner used to wear through first, and collegiate green hides most of those seams so the shoe reads as a single dark shape with the Three Stripes as the only clear line. Those stripes began on adidas as reinforcement stitched onto the upper rather than as branding, which is why they cross the flex point.
