Culture Note™
Obsidian is Jordan Brand's deep blue, dark enough to pass for black in low light and unmistakably navy in the sun, and putting it on suede changes the shoe's whole register. Leather makes the Air Jordan 1 look like sports equipment; suede makes it look like something you chose. The silhouette is unchanged from the one Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, a shoe the company expected to sell modestly and which instead sold out its first 50,000 pairs. The low cut arrived later as the everyday version, and obsidian suede is that everyday shoe dressed up: no contrast noise, one rich surface, and a colour that behaves like navy tailoring rather than like team kit.
Navy suede is the most tailoring friendly sneaker in this line. Recipe one: grey flannel trousers, a white shirt, a navy knit tie and an unstructured blazer, with the shoe reading deliberately casual rather than accidentally so. Recipe two: light wash denim, a cream sweatshirt and a tan suede jacket, where the two suede textures echo each other and the blue does the grounding. Navy or grey socks; black socks kill the blue. Fit wise the low cut suits a slight break or a cuff. The hard rule is weather: keep suede out of rain and off wet streets entirely, because a single soaking will leave tide marks the brush cannot lift, and store them with trees so the nap does not crush along the flex line.
Jordan has been a division of Nike since 1997, running its own athlete roster, apparel line and collaboration programme, and by 2022 it generated about 5.1 billion dollars for the parent company. That scale is why premium material executions exist: the brand does not need every release to be a court story any more. The 1 arrived in culture through Spike Lee's advertising and through hip hop, with Ice Cube, Jay-Z, 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. naming Jordan and his sneakers in records, and it now sits in wardrobes where a suede navy sneaker does the work a loafer used to do.
Suede across the upper, which is the material difference that matters. Suede takes light differently panel to panel, so the blocking reads through texture rather than contrast, and it softens faster than leather, moulding to the forefoot within a few wears. It is also the more demanding material: water spots it, oil marks it permanently and grit abrades the nap. A dedicated suede brush plus a crepe eraser is not optional, and a protective spray before first wear is the single highest value ten minutes you will spend on this pair. Underneath, the flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle gives the same firm, close to the ground feel the 1 has always had. Low collar, quick on and off.
