Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 January 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Dark Pony/Black. Dark Pony is a leather led SE, and the name points at surface rather than at a team or a campaign. Pony finished materials carry a short nap that catches light differently across the panel, which changes how the Air Jordan 1 Low behaves in a way colour alone cannot. The base is the panel map Peter Moore drew in the mid eighties with the ankle removed, a shape stable enough that the house can spend its invention entirely on material. That approach belongs to the era after 1997, when Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division and the first model became a platform for ideas rather than a court shoe with a colour calendar.
Recipe one, texture layering: brown or charcoal wool trousers, a chunky knit and a suede jacket, so the nap on the shoe belongs to a whole outfit built on surface. Recipe two, simple dark: black jeans with a plain white tee and a black overshirt, letting the texture be the only detail. Occasion is autumn and winter, evenings, dry conditions. Fit is standard length with a close low collar and a thin sock. Care differs from smooth leather: use a suede or nap brush dry, never soak, keep it out of rain and salt, use a dedicated protector spray rather than a leather conditioner, and let any dampness dry slowly at room temperature.
Material experiments on this silhouette are downstream of the collaboration programme, where Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS taught the market to read the first model as a design object rather than sportswear. The house then absorbed that lesson into its own seasonal work. The original cultural weight is older and simpler: basketball colliding with hip hop, Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z making the shoes a lyric. A textured dark low is what that heritage looks like when the point is touch rather than logo recognition.
Textured, nap finished panels in a dark tone across the toe, quarter and Swoosh divisions, on a midsole and rubber outsole, cut to the low collar. Napped and hair textured surfaces behave unlike smooth leather: they hold dust, they take water marks rather than scuffs, and they flatten permanently if you scrub them, so a soft brush used dry is the correct tool. The low collar is padded and close. Underneath, this is the first model, which came before the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line from the second shoe, so the ride is a stitched cupsole and foam wedge: firm and flat, with the usual short break in.
