Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 December 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black. White and black on an Air Jordan 1 Low is the most produced combination in this catalogue, which makes it both the safest purchase and the hardest one to describe precisely, since the brand has run many different white and black arrangements on this silhouette. What is constant is the shape: Peter Moore designed the 1 with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike had signed on 26 October 1984, it reached the public on 1 April 1985, and the first 50,000 pairs sold out against a company projection of about 3 million dollars over three years. The low cut came later and became the everyday version. In white and black it is the default sneaker the model has quietly become.
This is the pair you buy to wear rather than to photograph. Recipe one: dark straight jeans, a white tee and a navy overshirt, the classic proportions this shoe was made for. Recipe two: khaki chinos, a black knit polo and black socks, a smarter fit where the low cut passes almost as a dress sneaker. White socks with denim, black socks with tailoring. Keep the hem short enough to clear the collar. Because white panels are unforgiving, clean them on a schedule rather than when they look bad, and if you plan to wear these hard, buy them expecting the midsole to be the part that dates them first.
The 1 became a cultural object through Nike's willingness to build advertising around conflict. The league's uniform policy required shoes at least 51 percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and made the Banned campaign out of it. Spike Lee directed the early spots as Mars Blackmon, hip hop carried the shoe further through records by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and the result is a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. A plain white and black pair inherits all of that at the most accessible price point.
Leather upper on a low collar with white across the quarter and midsole and black taking the overlays, branding or toe depending on the specific arrangement. Two colour builds are the easiest to keep looking new because the contrast is high and clean lines are obvious, and the same contrast is why a dirty midsole ruins the effect faster than on any tonal pair.
