Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 5 November 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Deep Royal Blue/Fire Red/Sail/Black/Muslin. Rare Air is the phrase the brand uses about its own founder, and putting it on an Air Jordan 11 Retro is a considered choice: the 11 is the model that most changed what a basketball shoe could look like. It came from the Tinker Hatfield era, when Nike had handed the line to a designer who turned a signature shoe into a design series with its own vocabulary, and it is the model that brought patent leather, a formal wear material, onto a hardwood floor. Blue patent is easier to dress than red. First: charcoal wool trousers with a clean break, a white shirt, a navy knit, using the mudguard as the shine in an otherwise matte outfit. Second: dark indigo denim, a grey crewneck, a navy overcoat, keeping the whole outfit inside the shoe's own colour family. Occasion is evening and event, dry weather only. Fit is true to size with a close collar. The 11 is the shoe that made the argument sneakers are still making, that a performance shoe can be dress footwear. It arrived during the years Air Jordan was being written into culture by hip hop, with rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes, and by Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan. Michael Jordan remains the founding signature athlete, signed in 1984 on a deal that still pays him royalties, reported between 150 and 256 million dollars in 2022. A shoe named for him rather than for a colour is aimed at people who know that story.
The 11's build is distinctive: a patent leather mudguard wrapping the lower half of the shoe, a lighter upper above it, a high padded collar and a carbon fibre shank plate of the type the line adopted for torsional stiffness. Nike Air cushioning has run through the range since the Air Jordan II. Patent behaves unlike any other material in this catalogue; it does not scuff, it scratches, and a deep scratch will not brush out. On a blue mudguard the scratches read white, so the practical advice is a soft cloth after every wear and a box rather than a shelf for storage.
