The A168 is the tall cousin of Casio's small steel digitals, and the A168WEMB-1BDF is the version that goes fully dark: black dial, black finished steel, the whole watch reduced to one tone. Casio has been building this case language since its digital era opened with the Casiotron in November 1974, and the shape survived because it was never styled in the first place. A rectangular module needs a rectangular case, a bracelet needs to be flat, so that is what got made. Blacking the whole thing out decades later did not require redesigning anything. It just removed the last bit of contrast and turned a utility watch into a graphic object.
Two builds. First, monochrome: black tee, black trousers, black sneakers, the watch as texture rather than accent. Second, contrast: raw indigo denim, an ecru overshirt, and the black case as the single hard punctuation on the wrist. It suits narrow wrists better than a sports watch, and it is genuinely unisex. Size the bracelet until it is snug behind the wrist bone. Clean it with a barely damp cloth and never a polish, since polishing compounds strip the black coating. Keep it away from pools and seawater. When the display dims, replace the cell and the gasket together rather than one at a time.
All-black versions of the small Casio digital are what turned this shape into a menswear staple. The brand had already established that a cheap Casio is a statement rather than a shortfall, mostly through the F-91W passing 100 million units and becoming the most sold watch in the world. Blacking out the steel version pushed it from anti-status into something closer to design object, and it now sits comfortably next to workwear, techwear and archive sportswear. Nothing about the watch changed. What changed is that people started reading a rectangular digital case as a deliberate aesthetic position, which it now is.
The black finish over steel is the entire proposition, and it behaves differently to plain steel: it hides scratches until it does not, then shows brightwork at the edges where the coating wears. That patina is part of why people like it. Underneath sits the same simple low-draw digital module Casio has iterated for decades, with light, alarm and stopwatch, and almost nothing that can go wrong. The bracelet is folded steel, light for its size, and needs sizing down properly since these cases are small. Treat the water rating as splash only, and be aware that coated cases dislike abrasive cleaners far more than bare steel does.
