Miss Dior began in 1947, alongside the New Look collection that rebuilt French couture after the war. Christian Dior wanted a perfume scented with love, and the name arrived by accident: his muse Mitzah Bricard saw his sister Catherine walk into the couture house and said look, there is Miss Dior. Paul Vacher and Jean Carles composed the original, a chypre carrying Grasse rose and jasmine over soft lavender, sage and a bed of oak moss. By 1950 the bottle had taken the shape it still holds, geometry cut like a suit, houndstooth check, a couture bow tied at the neck. Centifolia rose grown in the Grasse fields does the work through the heart, honeyed with a subtly peppery edge that stops it turning jammy, and powdery iris adds the polish that makes it read expensive on skin. The drydown is where the wear time is earned: creamy sandalwood, musks that settle like a cocoon, and sweetness from Papua vanilla, benzoin and tonka bean. Even the bow is engineered, woven by Faure, ribbon makers running wooden looms since 1864.
