Dior has owned the word Sauvage since 1966, when Edmond Roudnitska built Eau Sauvage as the house's first men's fragrance. Sauvage is not that scent revived. It is a separate composition by François Demachy built around a single image: wild open space, blue sky over rock, a sun hot enough to blur the horizon. Demachy went to Calabria for the bergamot and worked with local growers to shape a custom cut, fruitier and more peppery than standard bergamot, then pushed the whole thing towards ambroxan rather than the usual sweet amber. Johnny Depp has fronted the campaign since launch, driving out of the city and into the desert, and that film did nearly as much for the fragrance as the juice did. Sauvage became the men's fragrance every other release gets measured against.
Two ways to run it. One, the daytime workhorse: two sprays, one either side of the neck or on the chest under a shirt, before a work day or a long flight, where the pepper keeps it awake in heat instead of turning syrupy. Two, the night out: three sprays with one on the shirt collar, since it lasts on fabric far longer than on skin and the trail stays with you late. Expect six hours and up on skin, more if your skin runs dry, and days on clothing. It works year round and is at its best in warm weather, but it projects hard for the first couple of hours, so go light in cars and small rooms. Store the bottle upright, away from sunlight and bathroom steam, and the juice holds for years.
Sauvage did something rare: it became the default. Walk through an airport, a wedding or an office lift and you will meet it, which is either the argument for it or against it depending on who you ask. The Depp campaign gave it a face and a landscape that almost no fragrance gets, and the ambroxan-forward dry-down it popularised turned into an entire genre the rest of the market spent years chasing. In India it is the bottle people buy first when they graduate from deodorant and body sprays, and it is also the one that stays on the shelf after a collection is built, because it never reads wrong for the room. Ubiquity is the trade you make: you smell excellent, and you smell like plenty of other people.
The arc is deliberate and easy to follow. It opens cold and loud: Calabrian bergamot cut with pepper and Sichuan pepper, a citrus that bites instead of sweetening, and that first stretch is the part people recognise across a room. The heart takes the edge off without going floral, lavender and geranium bringing an aromatic, almost barbershop cleanliness while pink pepper, elemi, vetiver and patchouli hold a green spine underneath. The base is where it earns the reputation: ambroxan, cedar and labdanum, a dry mineral amber that sits close to the skin and reads warm and faintly salty rather than sugary. In Eau de Toilette form it stays sharper and airier than the heavier concentrations in the line, which is precisely why it survives Indian heat.
